Where Science Meets the Heart: LIGHT at APA Denver

LIGHT exhibits at the APA convention for the first time

This August, Denver welcomed the American Psychological Association (APA) National Convention, filling the city with thousands of scientists, educators, clinicians, consultants, and students from around the world. The theme this year was “Perspectives, Power, Possibilities,” which felt like the perfect backdrop for three days of learning, connection, and growth. The skies were clear, the air was warm, and the whole city seemed to carry a spirit of excitement and energy.

For LIGHT Movement, it was an honor to be part of it all. We were invited to present a breakout session titled “Growing with our Grief: A Somatic Approach to Integration and Finding Meaning.” The room was full of thoughtful people ready to explore how somatic practices, grounded in science, can support those navigating grief. As we spoke, we could see heads nodding and hear questions that showed how deeply this work resonates across cultures and communities.

Our time at the exhibitor booth became another beautiful layer of connection. Early in the morning, Katie, Amy, and our LIGHT team carefully set up the space, placing each piece with intention, filling swag bags, and preparing to welcome visitors. Throughout the convention, people from all over the globe stopped by. From clinicians from South America, researchers from Europe, students from Asia, to practitioners from every corner of the United States.

Again and again, we heard words that affirmed our mission:

“Yes, grief touches everything. And yes, there is love in grief, held together.”

The booth was more than a table. It became a gathering place. Visitors shared stories of loss, healing, and resilience. Some came with curiosity, others with lived experience, and many left with a sense of belonging. In the midst of the conversations, we added a touch of fun by holding a prize drawing.

The smiles on the faces of the winners who received a yoga mat and a copy of Dr. Arielle Schwartz’s book were a reminder that even small gestures of care can brighten someone’s day.

We are deeply grateful to our community sponsors who made the swag bags so special and helped us bring pieces of The LIGHT Movement into the hands of attendees:

The three days we spent at the convention were a gift. Between the beautiful weather, the hum of conversations in every hallway, and the enthusiasm of people eager to share and learn, it felt like Denver was alive with possibility. We return to our daily work with gratitude for the connections we made and with renewed energy for our mission.

At The LIGHT Movement, we believe grief is not meant to be carried alone. Together, we can create spaces where healing is nurtured and where love in grief is held together.

Until next year,

LIGHT Movement
